lekanis pyxis

lekanis pyxis

This lidded bowl is a type of pyxis and is close in appearance to the lekanis.

Shape: The bowl tends to be hemispherical and rests on a low base-ring. It has a slightly domed lid which has a tall stem with a flattened disc on it which acts as the handle for the lid. This type of pyxis may have a single strap handle on its side or it may be handleless.

History: The lekanis pyxis is popular in the black-painted wares of the second half of the fifth century.

Term: The ancient Greek word pyxis is used to describe a box made of boxwood, which was used by physicians for holding their drugs. This particular pyxis is named for its likeness to the lekanis.
